There’s more to this emergency than just the biological virus. Cybercriminals are seizing the opportunity presented by the chaos and turmoil over the biological virus to launch computer viruses – as well as many other forms of cyberattacks, which include

1. Ransomware

A hospital with one of the largest COVID-19 testing laboratories in the Czech Republic had its entire IT network shutdown by a ransomware attack. Mobile phones are also targeted by CovidLock which disguises itself as an app that tracks virus-infected victims

2. Phishing

Always a threat, now made even worse as people’s anxiety overrides caution. These messages often tempt users to access them by claiming to originate from official sources (such as the WHO), an important customer, a large supplier, or anyone else who may be expected to have knowledge of, or be affected by, the coronavirus

3. Banking Trojans

Staying at home means transacting online, and that creates an opportunity for cybercriminals to use Trojans that target financial activity to harvest users’ credentials.

4. Remote Access Trojans

These are aimed at everyone, from individuals to governments, and enable remote execution of malicious processes in addition to allowing the malware to ‘phone home’ with critical information

5. Scams

Advertisements (or even websites) that claim to offer health gear or special cures are springing up, exploiting gullibility and desperation as the world begins to panic

And if all this weren’t enough, some cybercriminals are selling COVID-19 themed kits for other criminals to use in their attacks. The world is now counting on cybersecurity, to allow hospitals to function without disruption, for employees to work from home and keep the engines of the economy running, and for all of us to keep in touch with our loved ones. Let us keep doing what we do best, and support humanity in its hour of need.
